VIC:Mum's plea for anti-violence message
The mother of a teenager stabbed to death outside a Melbourne house party has urged
the judge sentencing her son's killer to send a strong anti-violence message to the community.
19-year-old DYLAN CASEY died after being stabbed in the chest and abdomen by 24-year-old
SCOTT ROY JEWELL outside an 18th birthday party for JEWELL's sister in suburban Edithvale
in January last year.
The Victorian Supreme Court's heard the stabbing arose from a scuffle that began after
JEWELL and his father went to find out who damaged a picket fence.
JEWELL has pleaded guilty to defensive homicide and will be sentenced at a date to be fixed.

Hurricane Electric's Director of IPv6 Strategy to Moderate Carrier Panel at the Inter-Agency IPv6 Meeting
Type: News
Hurricane Electric, a global IPv6-native Internet backbone and colocation provider, announced that its Director of IPv6 Strategy, Martin Levy, will moderate a panel of tier-1 carriers at the Inter- Agency IPv6 Meeting taking place February 2-3 at the VHA National Conference Center in the Crystal City area of Arlington, Virginia.
On February 3, at 8:30 a.m., Martin will be joined by IP architects from some of the largest carriers including Craig Pierantozzi, Principal Architect at Level 3 Communications, Peter Fernandez, Staff Network Engineer at Qwest, and Dr. Daniel Awduche, Fellow (PMTS), Network Technology at Verizon, for a panel discussion of network carriers' roadmaps, plans, schedules and status relating to IPv6 support.
At 9:30 a.m., the panel will pause to watch the webcast of the Global Internet Groups press conference in Miami, Florida. The webcast will discuss the allocation of the final remaining IPv4 /8 address blocks to regional internet registries.
Two recent events illustrate why the federal government is at a critical juncture with respect to IPv6 support. The first is the announcement that the last remaining IPv4 /8 address blocks have been allocated. The second is last year's White House directive that all federal agencies natively support IPv6 on public-facing servers by 2012 and on internal client applications by 2014.
The Inter-Agency IPv6 Meetings are sponsored by the Veterans Administration and hosted by the VA IPv6 Steering Committee. The conference is intended to promote the exchange of IPv6 best practices, guidelines and wisdom among representatives of federal agencies.

Fed: Poor Aussie children more likely to be fat: new study
More than one in five grade six students are fat .. with poor children most at risk
.. according to a major new Australian study.
Researchers tested almost 200 children at 22 private and public primary schools across Adelaide.
They measured their body shape including weight .. waist measurement and skin-fold
tests .. checked their physical activity and television viewing hours .. and reviewed
their diet over three 24-hour periods.
About 21 per cent of the boys were overweight and two per cent obese .. while 16 per
cent of the girls were overweight and four per cent were obese.
Almost half of the boys and more than 60 per cent of the girls exercised less than
the recommended one hour a day .. and about 40 per cent of both genders watched more than
two hours television a day.
The researchers also found the children's socioeconomic status .. measured by their
postcode and their parents' level of education .. was related to their body shape.
The study found poorer boys were more likely to have a high-fat diet and a large waist
measurement.
But the researchers weren't able to work out if diet .. exercise or more television
watching was responsible for the higher levels of obesity among poorer girls .. and suggested
genetics may be a factor.
Poorer Australian adults are already known to be at higher risk of obesity .. as well
as cancers .. respiratory and cardiovascular diseases .. mental illness and diabetes.

VOIP Providers - Market Size Information.
Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/8240fc/voip_providers) has announced the addition of the "VOIP Providers" report to their offering.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) specifies the transmission and reception of audio over the Internet. A connection between caller and call recipient is established using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP has many functions, including negotiating the codecs used during the call, transferring calls, and terminating calls. Over the past five years it has become increasingly difficult to keep an overview of all the worldwide operating VoIP services or Broadband phone providers. New VoIP / Broadband phone VoIP services are launching almost on a weekly basis and it has become almost impossible to compare PC to Phone and Broadband Phone service providers without weeks and weeks of time consuming research. Each VoIP provider proclaims to have the best service and the cheapest local, long distance or international VoIP phone rates, but the differences are still substantial (up to 1000%), although in most cases the VoIP services are cheaper than most traditional telephone companies (PSTN). Choosing the right Voice over IP service for your specific need and calling pattern, especially if you make regular international calls can save you a small fortune every month.
The voice over IP (VoIP) protocol suite is generically broken into two categories, control plane protocols and data plane protocols. The control plane portion of the VoIP protocol is the traffic required to connect and maintain the actual user traffic. It is also responsible for maintaining overall network operation (router to router communications). The data plane (voice) portion of the VoIP protocol is the actual traffic that needs to get from one end to another.

Mayo Clinic Offers Baseline Concussion Testing to Arizona High School Athletes Statewide at No Cost.
As knowledge about the dangers of concussions in sports continues to grow, Mayo Clinic will make baseline concussion testing available at no cost to more than 100,000 high school student athletes in Arizona leading up to the 2011-2012 sports season.
Baseline concussion testing measures how the brain is working before injury, and has recently been recommended by the Arizona Interscholastic Association for all scholastic athletes. The Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool will be available through benefactor support and Mayo Clinic at no cost to the athlete. The test can be taken from any computer with Internet access, takes 8-15 minutes to complete, and the athlete or parent can share the results with health care providers of their choice. After a concussion, the test can be repeated multiple times, and doctors can then monitor the results of this test, along with a medical evaluation, to determine when athletes can safely resume normal activities - and in the case of a student athlete, when they can return to their sport. For more information or to obtain access to take the computerized concussion test, student athletes, parents, coaches, athletic trainers and school athletic directors in Arizona can email concussion@mayo.edu or visit http://www.mayoclinic.org/concussion-testing/ The baseline concussion testing initiative comes on the heels of the passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1521, which requires that high school athletes who have sustained a head injury be barred from further physical activity until they're cleared by a licensed health care provider. The law also requires schools to educate coaches, students and parents about the dangers of concussions.
"The diagnosis of concussion, assessment of its severity, and knowing when an athlete can return to physical activity, competition, work or school is not always clear," said David Dodick, M.D., a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and President of the American Headache Society. "Having a baseline concussion assessment for each athlete will assist in a physician's ability to identify and quantify a change in brain function, and determine when the athlete has returned to his or her baseline."
After a concussion, if an athlete continues to play or returns to play too early, there is a significant risk of experiencing another concussion, and Dr. Dodick added that "repeat concussions may take longer to resolve, and come with a risk of permanent neurological damage, or rarely, death." Children, adolescents and female athletes appear to be at a higher risk for concussions, and may also take longer to recover.
While the importance of baseline testing is clear, the results should be used with a comprehensive medical evaluation. While the majority of concussions resolve relatively quickly, some athletes may experience symptoms that may persist for weeks or months, or longer. The medical care and rehabilitation of these athletes is best achieved by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals with expertise in the evaluation and management of concussion.
Providing this baseline assessment will also create awareness about the importance of concussion and the importance of safeguarding the brain health of young athletes. Ultimately, according to Dr. Dodick, "this initiative will hopefully be a significant step toward having all youth and adults throughout our state who are involved in competitive or recreational sporting activities to establish a baseline concussion test."
Mayo Clinic experts have been working with colleagues at Arizona State University and Phoenix Children's Hospital to develop and implement a concussion awareness strategy for the State of Arizona.
"It is truly a concern that the young athlete and child may be particularly susceptible to concussive injury and that it might have a lifelong, permanent effect," said P. David Adelson, M.D., Director of the Children's Neuroscience Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital and Head of the Pediatric Neurotrauma Program. "Working with Mayo Clinic and ASU, we feel we can identify earlier when there has been a change in these kids and intervene so as to minimize these effects and get them back to their lives."
"We are pleased that ASU and the Mayo Clinic are partnering to provide support for the health and wellbeing of student athletes at all ages," said Martha Christiansen, Associate Vice-President of Educational Outreach and Student Services and Director of Counseling and Consultation.
The renowned multidisciplinary teams at Mayo Clinic along with it's partners at Phoenix Children's Hospital includes physicians and other experts from Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Neuropsycholology, Psychiatry, Headache Medicine, Sports Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Vestibular Medicine, Physical therapy, and Occupational therapy for adults, adolescents and children. Through their coordinated and comprehensive approach, this group has evaluated and treated athletes with concussion from the youth to the professional ranks. About Mayo ClinicMayo Clinic is a non-profit worldwide leader in medical care, research, and education for people from all walks of life. New Online Information Research from University of Zaragoza Outlined.
"The objective of this paper is to analyse whether individuals' socioeconomic characteristics - age, gender and income - influence their online shopping behaviour. The individuals analysed are experienced e-shoppers i.e. individuals who often make purchases on the internet," scientists writing in the journal Online Information Review report.
"Design/methodology/approach - The technology acceptance model was broadened to include previous use of the internet and perceived self-efficacy. The perceptions and behaviour of e-shoppers are based on their own experiences. The information obtained has been tested using causal and multi-sample analyses. The results show that socioeconomic variables moderate neither the influence of previous use of the internet nor the perceptions of e-commerce; in short, they do not condition the behaviour of the experienced e-shopper. Practical implications - The results obtained help to determine that once individuals attain the status of experienced e-shoppers their behaviour is similar, independently of their socioeconomic characteristics. The internet has become a marketplace suitable for all ages and incomes and both genders, and thus the prejudices linked to the advisability of selling certain products should be revised. Originality/value - Previous research related to the socioeconomic variables affecting e-commerce has been aimed at forecasting who is likely to make an initial online purchase. In contrast to the majority of existing studies, it is considered that the current development of the online environment should lead to analysis of a new kind of e-shopper (experienced purchaser), whose behaviour differs from that studied at the outset of this research field," wrote B. Hernandez and colleagues, University of Zaragoza.

2011 Award recipients.(NTCA 2011 Annual Meeting & EXPO)
Marketing Award
Jody Heustess from Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. (Shallotte, N.C.) received the Marketing Achievement Award in recognition of his accomplishments in exceptional marketing for a rural telco. Jody oversees not only the marketing of ATMC's traditional telephone business but also marketing for cable TV, wireless and security services. He developed a four-month campaign to relaunch ATMC's residential bundles by introducing new long-distance calling plan options for bundle customers. In an area vulnerable to competition, these new long-distance calling plan options helped protect access lines and associated revenue for ATMC. Jody's campaign resulted in the sale of 1,266 new bundles to residential customers, a 17% increase in sales.
Public Relations Achievement Award
Karen Powell from SkyLine Membership Corp. (West Jefferson, N.C.) received the Public Relations Achievement Award for her approach to the public relations of SkyLine's grant program, a true example of public relations for rural telcos at its best.
The program distributes grants to enhance education through technology and shows SkyLine's commitment to its member communities and to strengthening the cooperative's relationship with local education officials as a telco provider and partner. SkyLine engaged technology directors from the five county school systems in its service area to learn about each school's specific technology needs and discovered a collective need for smart boards in the classrooms. SkyLine collaborated with the smart board equipment distributor to provide support for the grantees through every step of the application process. SkyLine even provided training sessions for educators at its office with certified trainers, and continues to communicate regularly with area technology directors to anticipate future needs and plans for funding.

This grant program truly is an example of a telco collaborating with its local schools to make a positive impact that enhances the overall quality of life in their service area.
* Heroism Award
Ralph Neu, a director for Dickey Rural Networks (Ellendale, N.D.), received the Heroism Award for his courage in the face of an emergency. On a cold evening last March, when one of Ralph's neighbors, Tracy Heil, could not be reached at his farm, Ralph did not think twice about heading out in the freezing rain and braving the icy roads to check on him. When he arrived he discovered Tracy had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning in the farm's shop.
Ralph was unable to find a pulse, and quickly grabbed Tracy's coveralls to pull him out of the shop, even as Tracy's protective dog bit Ralph's leg. Once outside, Ralph found a pulse and called 911, following the instructions from the operator for 45 minutes until an ambulance arrived. Because of Ralph's quick and selfless actions that evening, Tracy recovered and was released from the hospital within 24 hours.

* Director Life Achievement
Jim Elliot, chairman of Clear Creek Mutual Telephone (Oregon City, Ore.), received the Director Life Achievement Award. Jim's leadership contributions are many at both his telco and in his community.
Clear Creek has benefited greatly from Jim's dedication and commitment. He has served as an officer for 24 years of his 34-year tenure and has attended nearly 350 board meetings involving more than 1,000 hours of his time. Jim is always mindful of members' needs. His background as an electrical engineer provides a basis to manage rapid changes in technology, and he has encouraged diversification in the services Clear Creek provides. Jim also recognizes the value of building strong relationships with other cooperatives and has encouraged partnerships to reduce costs and better service members.
Jim is still dedicated to quality of service, responsible management and reasonable rates for members, and his commitment to and enthusiasm for Clear Creek are exemplary.
* Manager Life Achievement
Sid Shank, retired general manager of Bloomingdale Communications (Bloomingdale, Mich.), received the Manager Life Achievement Award. Sid has demonstrated incredible commitment to rural telcos. Sid began with Bloomingdale as the community relations representative and was asked to step into the role of general manager nine years later.
Between 2002 and 2005, Sid implemented many positive changes within Bloomingdale, including building the company's relationship with the community continuing to diversify Bloomingdale's services and fostering a team environment for the company.
Sid has testified on behalf of NTCA before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee's Telecom and Internet Subcommittee on the importance of the Universal Service Fund. She also worked to build strong relationships with national and local legislators, and took a leadership role in grassroots advocacy on behalf of the industry. In the final two years of Sid's role as general manager, she increased subscribers of the new CLEC fiber to the home construction by 900%.
Since Sid's official retirement in 2009, it is clear that her greatest legacy is the solidarity between employees, management and the board. Sid has demonstrated her incredible commitment to rural telecom through these many efforts, and we are grateful to count her among our industry.
Alliance for Digital Equality Hosts Digital Empowerment Summit In Los Angeles, Ca.
The Alliance for Digital Equality (ADE) brought together a diverse group of policymakers, thought leaders, and media from across the country last week at their Digital Empowerment Summit in Los Angeles, CA: "The State of the Underserved American in the Midst of the Broadband Revolution." Television host Tavis Smiley, actor Hill Harper and CNN Contributor, Mario Armstrong moderated the event which featured a robust mix of community leaders and elected officials. Representing America's Mayors from coast to coast were prominent speakers including the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, who delivered a keynote address, former Mayor of Miami Manuel "Manny" Diaz, and the 58th Mayor of the City of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin.
ADE's summit was held just weeks before the Federal Communications Commission is expected to present lawmakers with our nation's first ever National Broadband Plan, and hours after ADE filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) opposing rules or regulations that would negatively affect the unserved and underserved among us. The event highlighted a national panel of experts who discussed the role of wireline and wireless broadband access and adoption in addressing some of the most critical issues facing underserved communities in our country today, such as access to a quality and affordable education, disparities in healthcare and economic development in low-income communities.
"At the moment, as the powerful in Washington DC are in the midst of debating well-meaning, but questionable policies that could potentially make broadband unaffordable to a vast majority of America's minorities," said Julius H. Hollis, ADE Chairman. "Instead of prohibitions that might raise the cost of broadband and delay broadband adoption by lower income Americans, communities of color, and others on the wrong side of the digital divide, we should encourage policies that drive Internet empowerment. As President Obama has made clear, we must make broadband more accessible and more affordable so that every American can fully participant in Internet society."
"The goal of bringing Broadband Internet access to each and every American is a priority of our President, and a noble one at that," said Manuel A. Diaz, Vice Chairman of the ADE Board of Directors. "As we work to achieve this goal, however, it is exceedingly important to note that policies that raise costs for average Americans will disproportionately impact minorities and low-income communities. We need to make sure that broadband policies do not place a heavier burden on individual consumers or restrict implementation of innovative approaches."
"There is a broadband gap that still exists today," said Dr. Victoria M. DeFrancesco Soto, a member of the ADE Board of Directors. "Under-utilization of broadband is an economic and social challenge among minority families in general. This is a disparity America literally cannot afford and it must be a priority. As we work to achieve broadband for all, we must ensure that the last to join the broadband revolution are not the first to drop off."
"Closing the digital divide can transform this imperfect society of ours into an oasis of true and lasting economic equality for all Americans, said Hollis. "ADE is committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that all Americans "regardless of their race, ethnicity or income" are empowered to join the digital revolution."
Highlights of the Summit can be viewed by tuning in at www.alliancefordigitalequality.org.

NetBenefit chosen to host media rich website for world famous Sadler's Wells; The world's No 1 dance theatre, Sadler's Wells, selects NetBenefit to host new media rich website.
M2 PRESSWIRE-30 April 2008-NETBENEFIT: NetBenefit chosen to host media rich website for world famous Sadler's Wells; The world's No 1 dance theatre, Sadler's Wells, selects NetBenefit to host new media rich website(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:30042008
London, UK -- NetBenefit, one of the UK's most experienced managed hosting providers, today announced it has been selected by Sadler's Wells, the world's premier international dance venue, to provide the hosting platform for its exciting new media rich website.
Based in Islington, North London, the beautifully designed theatre has played host to many famous faces both on stage and in the audience, including Darcey Bussell, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Kylie Minogue. As well as its main stage housing 1500 seats, Sadler's Wells has a smaller theatre onsite, and a West End base at the Peacock Theatre off Kingsway, which presents a programme of popular shows including the annual Christmas hit, The Snowman.
Sadler's Wells is 70% dependant on ticket sales, and with at least 55% of bookings completed online at any time, the website is a critical tool for the historical theatre, raising essential funds which are vital to any charitable organisation. The website enables visitors to choose and buy their theatre seats, purchase merchandise from the online shop and view performance information, including high resolution video clips. The theatre also launched its own YouTube channel in 2007.
"We have significantly redesigned our website to incorporate a greater degree of interactivity, enhancing the experience for the 60,000 - 90,000 website visitors we receive each day", explains Alec Cuffy, IT manager at Sadler's Wells. "In addition to the consistently high volume of daily traffic, we see considerable peaks when tickets go on sale for the world famous dancers and productions that the theatre attracts. The changes to our website meant that we needed a web hosting provider that could deliver sufficient bandwidth to guarantee our visitors the best user experience.
"We chose NetBenefit because we were confident that they could provide us with an increased level of web hosting services but also because we were impressed by their focus on service delivery. Everything has happened exactly as it should have done."
Colin Bell, sales and marketing director, NetBenefit comments: "Sadler's Wells' website has two main functions for its visitors - to provide compelling content about its productions and to generate a substantial percentage of the revenue that the theatre needs to continue to celebrate world class contemporary dance. With between 55% and 95% of bookings being conducted online, it is of the utmost importance that the website has sufficient levels of resilience to ensure it remains available but also that response times and page loading are fast so that all visitors enjoy a positive website experience that brings them back time after time. NetBenefit works closely with all of its clients to ensure that the solution we design and deliver is the very best for their business needs. When reputation and revenue rest upon the continuous availability of a website, your hosting provider becomes essential to the success of your online business.

To Ensure FPL Crews Are Able to Work Most Efficiently, Please Ask Customers to Follow These Few, Simple Procedures.
MIAMI -- There are a few ways customers can help our crews speed up the restoration process. First, we would appreciate if they do not stop and ask the crews when power will be restored. When customers direct their questions to crews working in neighborhoods they slow the critical work of the crews whose goal is the prompt and safe restoration of electric service to all FPL customers left without service in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Also when driving, customers are asked to clear the way for utility trucks. This is a little thing that really helps the restoration effort move along. Customers are also asked to pile the debris from their own clean-up efforts away from utility poles and transformers so that this infrastructure is easily accessible to crews working in the area.
We thank you for your cooperation. The information you have disseminated so far has helped customers understand the restoration process.

Chandler sprains ankle.
Byline: K.C. Johnson
CHICAGO _ Tyson Chandler found himself in the spotlight Thursday night_for all the wrong reasons.
Chandler, already fighting a sore back, sprained his right ankle in a light-hearted, pregame drill with fellow rookie Trenton Hassell. Chandler had to be assisted off the court by assistant coach Bill Cartwright, came out to the bench on crutches to watch the Miami game and is considered day-to-day for a team already battling injury problems.
Chandler also found himself defending his work ethic after coach Tim Floyd was quoted as questioning it in a column in Thursday's Tribune. Floyd rarely criticizes players in public.
"I wouldn't read too much into that," Floyd said. "I've said what I said, and that's it. It shouldn't be bigger than it was."
Floyd said he wasn't trying to send a message, but Chandler seemed to take it that way. He ran several sprints following Thursday's morning shootaround, was one of the first players to arrive at the United Center on Thursday and spent an hour working out on the court before his injury.
"Hopefully, [Floyd's] just saying that to motivate me," Chandler said. "That's what I take it as. Whenever anybody makes comments about me, it's my competitive nature to get back out there and try to throw it in their face."
Chandler added that he didn't work out extra after Wednesday's practice because he went to get a massage for his back.
Same page: Floyd has made it no secret that he and general manager Jerry Krause occasionally have disagreed on personnel decisions. But Floyd took a philosophical approach to such disagreements in comments on Thursday.
"In the off-season, when you go to him and say, `What about this guy?' he comes back and says, `That guy can't help you win a championship,'" Floyd said. "At the time, that's a negative to you. Over the long haul, that's a positive because you know ultimately that's what he's trying to do."
The Bulls are beginning yet another rebuilding phase centered on Chandler and Eddy Curry, but a clearly uncomfortable Floyd wanted no part of any discussion on whether he'd be a long-term part of it.
"Let's talk about the Heat," he said. "I'm tired of talking about myself and sympathy and `What's he going to do?' I'm fine."
Layups: Krause spent most of the pregame chatting with White Sox general manager Kenny Williams, whom Krause was instrumental in bringing to the White Sox as a player. ... Ron Artest, Brad Miller and Bev Floyd, wife of Tim, will read to 75 children at the Abraham Lincoln Centre on the South Side on Friday from 3-4 p.m.

Genex Creates Online Presence for Activision's New Call of Duty Franchise.
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2003
In support of its highly-acclaimed epic, war-themed Call of Duty(TM) PC game, Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATVI) has tapped Genex to create a web site that conveys the unparalleled action and excitement of this groundbreaking title to the millions of gamers who make up today's online audience.
Working hand-in-hand with Activision's brand marketing team, Genex has created a graphically rich marketing web site that immediately draws visitors into the energy and theme of Call of Duty. Located at www.callofduty.com, the site introduces fans to the cinematic intensity of the game and its epic combat situations with gameplay videos, original Flash elements, sound effects, screenshots and in-depth game information. The site enables game aficionados to share the action with friends by sending out video clips, screenshots and desktop wallpaper via a branded email "receiver."
"With the launch of the Call of Duty web site, Activision has raised the bar for videogame marketing sites," said David Glaze, Vice President, Creative, Genex. "We've created much more than the usual static collection of images and text. This site captures the experience and intensity of the game itself. We believe passionately in pushing the online experience to energize consumers and build brand relationships. The Call of Duty web site is engaging and acts as a linchpin in the franchises product marketing strategy, not simply an online brochure."
Call of Duty has already received widespread critical acclaim, earning the "Editor's Choice" award from top print and online gaming publications including PC Gamer magazine, IGN.com, Gamespy.com and Gamespot.com. The game delivers the movie-like cinematic intensity and chaos of battle and thrusts players to the front lines of combat, as ordinary soldiers fighting together as a squad through epic moments of World War II. Call of Duty enables players to see the war from multiple perspectives, fighting the Nazi war machine for the liberation of Europe as American, British and Russian soldiers through 24 intense single player missions and team-based Axis vs. Allies online multiplayer action.
